Hi. I’m Molly.
In August 2011, one week after my 23rd birthday, I was faced with a big decision. I had all the facts. I knew I had gained enough weight over the past few years to be officially overweight and physically unhealthy, and I knew why. I never had a shocking moment or a wakeup call. I wasn’t in denial. But I still had yet to take that first step. Possibly because it would be the hardest thing I’d ever done. The question was – was I ready?
I felt like I was. Then after stepping on the scale for the first time since age 14 and seeing a petrifying number, I wasn’t so sure anymore. Still, I whipped out my VISA card and tearfully typed my personal information and starting weight into Weight Watchers Online. And so it began.
Eight months later, I was 50 pounds lighter, and could barely remember what a whirlwind of a journey it had been. In total, I’ve lost 55 pounds since the day I signed up for Weight Watchers.
My only regret? Not documenting more of my struggles and successes as I transitioned into this new lifestyle. Better late than never though, right?
A Fresh Start For Molly is about the path I took to get here, what I’m up to now, and what my goals are for the future. The cliches you hear about completely changing your life for the better are true – I’ve gained (pun intended) a whole new outlook on practically everything around me.
I was afraid that if I started this blog it would sound too much like a pat on the back to myself. It’s not. This is a way for me to remember what I’ve accomplished and to keep motivated to lose the last bit of weight and complete my goals. I am only a beginner in just about everything I do, and I’d love it if that encouraged you in some way to become a beginner at something too.
I am not a nutritionist, a personal trainer or even a weight loss expert. This blog is not intended to give people advice or even to say my weight loss journey would be the best one for you. Still, I invite you to follow along as I share what I’ve learned and what I’m learning.
A bit about me:
I’m an East Coaster who lives beside the harbour in the oldest-incorporated city in Canada.
My fiancé, Daniel, is my biggest supporter. You can read more about that here and how he proposed to me here.
I used to be a journalist for radio, newspaper and a weekly magazine. Writing is my jam.
My favourite food is spinach. Biggest guilty pleasure? Poutine.
I am a vegetarian, but I have mixed feelings about it.
By day, I’m a copy editor for newspapers. By night, I watch PVRed shows like Mad Men and New Girl.
I started running in early 2011 and I love to swim and bike. Triathlons are in my future.
Welcome!

You may already have it, but I awarded you the One Lovely Blog Award!

Hi Molly! First of all, I’ve been loving your blog!
I know I’ve asked a WW question on a post before, but I have another if that’s okay : ). About a year ago, I joined Weight Watchers and lost about twelve or thirteen pounds. Since then, I’ve done a few more 12 week programs, but in between the programs I always gain the weight back, and then some! I’m back on Weight Watchers (and at my highest weight ever) and I’m having a tough time re-motivating. I find that I almost always use all of my activity points and most of my weekly points.
I’m not exactly sure why… But it is really frustrating! If you have any tips, tricks, or ways of motivating, please let me know!! It is much appreciated… and congrats again on your engagement!
Hi Carly! Do you go to Weight Watchers meetings? Maybe that could be something new to try. I always told myself I would go to meetings if I found just following the program online didn’t work for me. And WW leaders are much more experienced than me!
As far as motivating tips, I found I really enjoyed reading forums, blogs and talking to people about their own weight loss experiences because it helped me stay “checked in” to that motivated mentality.
I tried not to put too much pressure on myself and took it one day at a time – making a huge goal or thinking about the end point wasn’t motivating for me at all, it just stressed me out.
Other than that, I’m not sure if I can offer the best advice – I’m in a bit of a slump myself lately! I’m still maintaining but I’m just feeling blah about trying hard at anything right now.
I lost my weight because I was absolutely certain that was what I wanted to do and I was very focused on my goal. It was just the right time for me. I didn’t want to waste any time getting to goal. Right now I’m going through a phase where I don’t feel so dedicated, but I know that it will pass, like most things do.
Don’t be too hard on yourself – things will work out. This is just what worked for me – and you will find what works for you, too.
Thanks a ton for your reply! I totally agree about setting huge goals! Too much pressure
